News Story: Could the Asia-Pacific experience its own Cuban Missle Crisis?

An Asia-Pacific version of the Cuban Missile Crisis is brewing between China and Japan because of the development of space technology, a Taiwanese military expert has said.

The focus of the 10-year Basic Plan on Space Policy approved by the Japanese government at the beginning of the year has been shifted to security and potential military uses, according to Chang Ching, a research fellow at Taiwan's Society for Strategic Studies.

Although Tokyo claims it is preparing for threats by North Korea, Chang said the development of the next generation Epsilon solid fuel rocket in the 10-year space plan is part of Japan's intercontinental ballistic missile project focusing on at China.

Japan has mature solid fuel rocket technology, according to Chang, and the country's M-V rocket is bigger than the United States' LGM-118A Peacemaker and Russia's R-39 Rif missiles.
