News Story: Abe looks for dialogue with Xi Jinping, possibly in letter form

To begin a dialogue with the Chinese government regarding the territorial dispute over the Diaoyutai (Diaoyu or Senkaku) islands, Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, plans to send a personal letter to Xi Jinping through Natsuo Yamaguchi, the leader of the New Komeito Party, reports our sister newspaper China Times.

During a meeting between Abe and Yamaguchi in Tokyo on Jan. 19, the latter revealed his plan to visit China on Tuesday. They eventually reached a consensus on how to improve their country's relationship with China.

Yamaguchi hopes that he will be able to meet Xi Jinping, the new general party secretary, during his three-day trip to Beijing. It is also possible that Abe could dispatch Komura Masahiko, the vice chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, to accompany Yamaguchi. A personal letter written by Abe will also be delivered to Xi.
