News Story: US radar deployment in Australia will not please Beijing

C-Band Space Surveillance Radar

The decision by the United States to deploy powerful radar at the Harold E Holt Naval Communications Base in Western Australia may escalate tension between Washington, Canberra and Beijing, reports the state-run Chinese broadcaster China Network Television.

After Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta attended a security summit in Perth with their Australian counterparts Robert Carr and Stephen Smith on Nov. 14, a consensus was made to establish a C-band ground-based radar system operated by the US Air Force near the northwestern town of Exmouth. Smith further announced that the Space Surveillance Telescope currently located in New Mexico will be moved to an as-yet-undecided location in Western Australia.
