Taiwanese scholars attending a seminar held at Taipei City Council believe that the Ma Ying-jeou administration should take a tougher stance towards the Japanese over the Diaoyutai (Diaoyu or Senkaku) islands.
"We politicians should feel sorry about being quiet when ordinary people are fighting for the Diaoyutais," said Councilman Li Hsin, the host of the event, "The government always hides behind brave activists when the time to protect our territory arrives."
Li said that Diaoyutai islands are not really a issue regarding sovereignty, but dignity. If the Taiwanese government and people do not demonstrate their conviction over the issue, Taiwan will gain little respect from China and perhaps even the entire world.
