The JF-7, also known as the Xiaoling multirole combat aircraft and designed jointly by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, will become the backbone of the Pakistan Air Force in the future, said group captain Tariq Mehmood during an interview with the Want China Times at the 9th China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition.

As the only foreign air force attending the Zhuhai Air Show, Mehmood stressed that Pakistan enjoys a strong relationship with China. "The JF-7 is a very important program for both of our nations," said Mehmood, "We developed this aircraft as equal partners, and this is the reason why we are here." The Pakistan Air Force is currently the only operator of the JF-7 in the world. The fighter completed its test flight on Aug. 25, 2003. After it began its service in 2007, the Pakistan Air Force currently operates two squadrons of JF-7.
