Chinese President Hu Jintao's report on the opening day of the Communist Party's 18th National Congress showed that China is likely to maintain its current policies regarding Taiwan after he steps down as the party's general secretary and hands over power to Xi Jinping.
"[We must] explore the possible and reasonable arrangements for the political ties between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait under the unique situation when the country is not yet unified," Hu said in his report to the party congress on Nov. 8.
With such remarks, which fall under the area of political dialogue and negotiation, Beijing is waiting to see Taiwan's reaction towards its efforts to establish political contact on the basis of the 1992 Consensus, which has been the basis of renewed dialogue and agreements between the two sides since 2008.
