The expected new members of the Communist Party's Military Commission have indicated that promotion within the military is more institutionalized, but it is still unclear whether Hu Jintao will continue as the head of the commission following the party's 18th National Congress, which opens Thursday.
In a recent interview with CNN, former Hong Kong chief executive Tung Chee-hwa said Hu is likely to remain China's top military leader after the congress, where he is expected to hand over the reins as party general secretary to Vice President Xi Jinping, who is also the vice chairman of the 12-member military body.
Hu's predecessor as general secretary and president Jiang Zemin did the same during the previous transition of power a decade ago.
