The J-31, China's second fifth-generation stealth fighter designed by Shenyang Aircraft Industry Group, is considered a better option than the US-built F-35 for developing nations according to the Moscow-based Russian Military News Network.

After the first test flight of a prototype of the fighter on Oct. 31, the Russian website said the new fighter is apparently much lighter and cheaper than the J-20 developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, which had its maiden test flight early last year. Because of this, it may become a strong competitor to Lockheed Martin's F-35. Since the J-31 looks very similar to F-35, Russian Military News Network raised the suspicion that Chinese engineers may have developed the new aircraft with blueprints stolen from six US major aviation companies three years ago.
