RoK: ROK, Brazil Hold First Defense Strategy Dialogue, (and talks with Mexico)

The Korean and Brazilian Defense Ministries held senior defense talks to strengthen military cooperative ties between each other.

Lim Kwan-bin, Director of the Defense Ministry’s Defense Policy Office, and his Brazilian counterpart Admiral Carlos Augusto de Sousa met on July 6 (Reported on 17-8-2012) to exchange in-depth opinions on regional security situations and ways to enhance the military exchanges and defense industry cooperation between the two sides.

It is the first time that the Republic of Korea has established a regular assistant deputy ministerial talks between the Defense Ministries of the Republic of Korea and a South American country.

Prior to the talks in Brazil, Mr. Lim visited Mexico on July 3 (Reported on 17-8-2012) to exchange opinions with Mexican Deputy Minister of National Defense, who is an three-star Army general, and the Mexican Naval chief of staff with a rank of vice admiral, to enlist the Mexican Military’s support for the Korea’s policy toward North Korea.

He also discussed with them ways to bolster the defense and defense industry cooperation between the two militaries.

The ROK Ministry of National Defense expects Lim’s visit to Brazil and Mexico to take an opportunity to boost the international community’s understanding of the security landscape in the Korean Peninsula, to secure the support of the two South American nations for South Korea’s policy toward North Korea and to expand Korea’s defense diplomacy to Central and South American nations.
