At least six police officers were killed and three were wounded in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand in an attack by the Taliban terror group (banned in Russia), local media reported on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The attack occurred at a checkpoint in the Nawa district of the province on Tuesday night, the ToloNews broadcaster reported, citing a security source.

According to the media outlet, Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor, confirmed that there were casualties but did not provide any further clarification.

Taliban has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghanistan has been facing lack political and social stability for years, largely due to the activities of Taliban. In the recent years, the Islamic State terror group (also banned in Russia) has been able to set up local cells in the country as well.
