News Story: AFP upbeat on defense relations with Russia

MANILA, Philippines - The more, the better.

This is the stand of the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on the expected forging of a defense cooperation agreement between the Philippines and Russia.

“The AFP, as a matter of policy, is open to opportunities of positive and mutually beneficial engagements with other nation’s military organizations. A defense cooperation is among the considerations we have,” AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said.

Padilla issued the AFP’s official position on the matter, which is expected to take place when President Duterte flies to Moscow next month for an official visit.

Defense spokesman Director Arsenio Andolong said that the forging of defense relations had already been agreed upon in principle by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu during their bilateral engagements last year.
