News Stopry: Japan to negotiate but oppose pact to outlaw nuclear weapons

Japan is set to participate in talks on the proposed Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC) to kick off in New York on March 27, but maintain its position to oppose the pact, sources close to the government said.

Tokyo has resisted the proposed pact, which would outlaw nuclear arms and aim for nuclear disarmament, sparking criticism among hibakusha, or atomic-bombing survivors.

The government has decided to participate in the negotiations to be held at the U.N. headquarters in an effort to help lead the talks to constructive dialogue between nuclear and non-nuclear powers.
