News Story: New AFP chief has ‘long record of human rights violations

A human rights advocate group expressed their disapproval of the appointment on Wednesday of the Lieutenant General Eduardo Año as the new Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief.

In a statement released on the same day, Exodus Justice for Peace (EJP) spokesperson Jurie Jaime said the appointment of Año as the AFP Chief of Staff shows the Duterte administration’s track on the military remains the same as previous presidents, that of continuing militarization and attacks on lumad and farmer communities and leaders, without ever resolving the roots of the decades-long armed conflict.

“General Año has a long record of human rights violations, starting with the abduction and disappearance of activist Jonas Burgos, son of the late journalist Joe Burgos, in 2006,” Jurie said.
