The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is not expecting China to do anything violent should the ruling of the Hague-based United Nations International Tribunal on the Laws of the Seas (ITLOS) to be released Tuesday, favors the country.
For this reason, AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Ricardo Visaya sees no reason to raise the alert status of the military.
“There’s no need to raise alert. We don’t think China will take violent actions,” he added.
China has begun military drills in the South China Sea, state media reported on Saturday.
State television CCTV broadcast images of fighter aircraft and ships firing missiles, helicopters taking off and submarines surfacing.
