China warned of “conflicts and confrontation” in the West Philippine Sea after the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) tribunal in The Hague backed the Philippines’ case that there was no legal basis for them.
China reacted furiously to Tuesday’s decision, with its foreign ministry quickly declaring it “null and void”.
“Do not turn the South China Sea into a cradle of war,” vice foreign minister Liu Zhenmin told reporters in Beijing, as he described the ruling as “waste paper.”
Liu also accused five judges who ruled in the case “made money from the Philippines”, adding “and maybe other people gave them money too”.
