LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, June 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 27 travelers were kidnapped on Tuesday after Taliban militants intercepted three vehicles in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand, a provincial source said.
"Armed militants stopped two trucks and a long-distance bus along Kabul-Herat Highway in Mahajeer Bazaar locality of Gereshk district early Tuesday morning. They seized several passengers and took them to nearby villages," a security source told Xinhua anonymously.
Aqa Noor Kentoz, provincial police chief, confirmed the incident.
"We are aware of the incident and our security forces have launched a search operation to locate and rescue the captives from militants' custody," Kentoz told Xinhua.
