A US surveillance drone passed over waters off eastern Taiwan Tuesday, the second day of Taiwan's annual Han Kuang series of military exercises, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

"We kept close tabs on the aircraft, but the Defense Ministry will not comment further on the issue," ministry spokesperson Major General Luo Shou-he told local reporters.
The Wednesday edition of the opposition-leaning Liberty Times reported that the US Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle, the most advanced high-altitude, long-endurance drone used in the US military, was seen flying southward over the waters off eastern Taiwan.
