News Story: US drone spotted off eastern Taiwan during war games

A US surveillance drone passed over waters off eastern Taiwan Tuesday, the second day of Taiwan's annual Han Kuang series of military exercises, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

When asked about the report, the Ministry of National Defense confirmed that it had discovered "an unknown aircraft," but pointed out that it remained outside of Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ).

"We kept close tabs on the aircraft, but the Defense Ministry will not comment further on the issue," ministry spokesperson Major General Luo Shou-he told local reporters.

The Wednesday edition of the opposition-leaning Liberty Times reported that the US Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle, the most advanced high-altitude, long-endurance drone used in the US military, was seen flying southward over the waters off eastern Taiwan.
