News Story: PLA spends US$1.3bn on foreign weapon systems in 2014

A report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute published recently indicated that China's People's Liberation Army spent a total amount of US$1.36 billion last year to import weapon systems from various foreign nations, reports the Sina Military Network.

Russia remains China's largest foreign military supplier according to the report. Beijing spent a total of US$909 million to purchase weapons from Russia between 2013 and 2014. Most of equipment China bought from Russia were aircraft engines because it is still unable to make them on its own. Those purchased were mainly AL-31FN engines for J-10 fighters, AL-31F engines for J-15 carrier-based fighters and D-30 engines for its H-6K bombers and Y-20 cargo planes.
