Japan's participation in the biennial Exercise Talisman Sabre held in Australia's Northern Territory and Queensland between July 4-24 has attracted the attention of China, the country's nationalistic tabloid Global Times reported on July 7.
Admiral Li Jie of the PLA Navy noted the exercise has usually been between the United States and Australia. This year, however, in addition to the 30,000 military personnel from the United States and Australia, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force sent 40 officers and soldiers to take part in the drill. More than 500 troops from New Zealand are also involved.
