Chinese military officials have downplayed reports that a South Korean navy officer has been arrested for allegedly leaking defense intelligence to China.
On Saturday, a South Korean defense ministry spokesperson confirmed that a lieutenant commander assigned to the country's Defence Security Command is facing charges for allegedly selling military secrets to a suspected Chinese agent between 2009 and 2012, when he was studying at a university in China.
The officer, who was to be assigned to the ROK embassy in Beijing later this year, had allegedly asked a subordinate at the Defence Security Command for files on the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system on the basis that the embassy may need it.
