The United States appears to be trying to ease tensions with China after President Barack Obama suggested that some of China's claims in the South China Sea may be legitimate, reports Duowei News, a US-based Chinese political news outlet.

Speaking at a gathering of young Southeast Asian leaders at the White House Monday, Obama said the truth is that "China is going to be successful" and admitted that "it's big, it's powerful."

"Its people are talented and they work hard, and it may be that some of its claims [in the South China Sea] are legitimate," he said, but added that Beijing should not try to establish its territorial claims by "throwing elbows and pushing people out of the way."

"If, in fact, their claims are legitimate, people will recognize them," he said.
