In his recent article for Tokyo-based online current affairs magazine the Diplomat, associate editor Franz Stefan-Gady discussed the weaknesses of the People's Liberation Army Navy's submarine fleet.
It is estimated that China will have between 69 and 78 submarines by 2020, according to Pentagon's annual report published for the US Congress. Gady said that the PLA Navy's conventional-powered submarine armada consists of 13 Type 039 Song-class diesel-attack submarines and 13 Type 039A Yuan-class attack submarines. In addition, there are about 20 Yuan-class vessels planned for production.
