China's decision to conduct military drills at the Myanmar border is a sign that it will no longer tolerate violence spilling over into Chinese territory, according to the Chinese-language citizen journalism site Boxun.
The People's Liberation Army's Chengdu Military Region announced Monday that the joint air-ground live ammunition exercises near China's border with Myanmar will commence June 2, after which the region will become a no-fly zone and vehicles and personnel must comply with strict entry requirements. Boxun sources added that the PLA will also use the opportunity to test fly some new fighter jets.
Boxun said the duration of the drills will be indefinite and depend on developments in the simmering conflict between the Myanmar government and ethnic rebels that has repeatedly led to bombs and shells falling into southwest China's Yunnan province, killing several people and injuring many others.
