The PLA Navy may use the Joint Sea 2015 naval exercises to be held later this month in the Mediterranean Sea as an opportunity to showcase the Type 054A guided-missile frigates in the hope Russia will purchase them, according to our sister paper Want Daily.
Geng Yansheng, spokesperson for China's defense ministry, confirmed that the 19th escort task force of the PLA Navy patrolling the Gulf of Aden consisting of the Weishanhu, a Type 903 replenishment ship, as well as the Linyi and the Weifang, two Type 054A guided-missile frigates, will participate in the joint naval exercises with the Russian Navy.
An earlier suggestion by Alexander Mozgovoy, a Russian defense expert, for Russia to purchase Type 054A guided-missile frigates attracted attention from various state-run media in China.
