News Story: CCTV exposes PLA soldiers cheating in drills

The decision to allow China's national broadcaster CCTV to expose cheating in the People's Liberation Army during military drills demonstrates the resolve of the country's new generation of leaders in building a strong army free of corruption, reports Duowei News, a US-based Chinese political news outlet.

CCTV recently aired a report claiming that certain PLA officers fed up with losing during training exercises have been caught cheating. As a soldier can be "killed" if tagged on their infrared-sensitive targets, the cheaters decided to tape up the laser sensors and remove the smoke can from their helmets to make themselves "invincible" in the battle simulation.

This is not the first time the PLA has been caught cheating to bolster its performance. There have been previous reports that soldiers would pour water on sand to reduce floating dust to improve the accuracy of tanks during tests, as well as allegations of pre-installing underwater guideposts to help submarines improve their navigation results, scores that look good on paper but do not truly reflect the PLA's combat ability.
