News Story: Chinese vessels, jets to patrol near US-Philippines war games

China has responded to the recent US-Philippines joint war games taking place in the South China Sea by sending vessels and jets near the region on patrol missions, China's nationalist tabloid, the Global Times, cites Russia's Sputnik as reporting.

The 31st joint military exercise between the US and the Philippines opened on Apr. 20 with more than 6,500 soldiers from the US, 5,000 from its South Asian ally, 92 military jets and four vessels. It is the two countries' largest joint maneuver in 15 years, and the first one after they signed an agreement to boost defense cooperation last year.

On the evening of Apr. 21, two Chinese patrol ships steered into the Paracel Islands to patrol, in addition to jets and seaplanes that also took part in the mission.
