Beijing's "Belt and Road" initiative is unprecedented and global, a new way to create unprecedented interests and benefits which at the same time faces unprecedented risks and challenges, triggering proposals for international cooperation to maintain regional security, Guangzhou's Southern Weekend writes.
President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road in September and October 2013 when he visited Central Asia and Southeast Asia, calling for regional economic cooperation.
In developing the Silk Road Economic Belt, going north will reach Russia, moving west will mean encountering terror groups motivated by religious extremism and separatism, while going south means challenging the military deployment of the United States, India and Japan.
The development of the Maritime Silk Road faces similar risks and challenges along the routes and this needs regional cooperation to maintain stability for joint development, the report said.
