News Story: J-20 stealth fighter will not be sold overseas

China has made the decision not to export the J-20, the nation's first fifth-generation stealth fighter designed by Chengdu Aircraft Company, according to Strategy Page, a military website based in Washington DC.

Because Chengdu Aircraft Company has already produced J-10 and JF-17 fighters for overseas markets, this decision may come as a disappointment for the manufacturer of the stealth fighter, which is still in development. After the fighter's first appearance in 2011, six prototypes of the J-20 have been produced with subsequent modifications. The last two prototypes have been equipped with active electronically scanned array radar, the article said.

Three of the six J-20 prototypes were delivered for test flights in 2014. Viewed head on, the J-20 looks similar to Lockheed Martin's F-22. However, the fighter's overall shape, weight and engine power is closer to McDonnell Douglas's F-15C designed during the Cold War era. It is estimated to have a maximum weight of 36 tons.
