Writing for the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, military expert Michael Pilger has praised the Republic of China Navy's new Tuo River-class corvette, recently commissioned to enhance Taiwan's defense capability against a potential invasion by the People's Liberation Army.
As amphibious invasion is regarded as the chief threat to Taiwan's national security posed by mainland China, Pilger said it is important for the ROC Navy to devote more resources to the development of its patrol fleet. He said strategists in Taiwan believe the PLA would attempt to land troops on the main island of Taiwan via a mix of dedicated amphibious sealift and commandeered civilian merchant and fishing ships.
