News Story: North Korea plans to hold drills with Russia and others


North Korea has protested against a joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States and says it wants to hold a drill with Vietnam, Cuba, Brazil and Russia, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

The nuclear submarine USS Olympia has arrived in port at South Korea's southeastern province of South Gyeongsang for the exercise that is to begin on Thursday. South Korea also launched a submarine command on Feb. 1 to cope with evolving maritime security threats, making it the world's sixth country to form such a military unit.

Pyongyang has dubbed the exercise an act of provocation and demanded Seoul and Washington abort it. The South Korean defense ministry has said the exercise is a routine defense-oriented military activity.
