Joint naval exercises between China and Russia entered the live stage on Thursday, with vessels from both sides being spotted in the northern part of the East China Sea on May 22.
On the same day, Japan's ground, air and maritime self-defense forces also conducted a military exercise in the waters off Kagoshima prefecture on the southernmost tip of Kyushu.
This was the first time that Japan's ground, air and maritime self-defense forces have simulated defending against an attack on an island group, Japan's defense ministry stated.
