Sri Lanka: 2 Indian Naval Ships and Coast Guard Ship “Varuna” arrive at the Port of Colombo


Indian Naval Ships, “INS Sujata”, “INS Tarangini” and Coast Guard Ship “ICGS Varuna” arrived at the Port of Colombo on 17th April 2013 on¬ a training visit. The ships were welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in accordance with naval traditions on arrival.

Head of the team, Captain Vinay Kumar Sawhney and Ships’ Commanding Officers, Commander Dalip Singh, Commander Arun Kumar and Commander Sugreev Tamvada paid courtesy calls on Director General Operations, Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera, Director General Training, Rear Admiral Udaya Bandara and Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe of the Sri Lanka Navy. They held cordial discussions and exchanged mementos as a gesture of goodwill. 

INS Sujata is an offshore petrol vessel with a Chetak helicopter onboard. It is 101.1 meters in length. It has a displacement of 1,890 tons and a complement of 192 naval personnel onboard. 

INS Tarangini is a sail training ship which is 54 meters in length. It has a displacement of 420 tons and a complement of 80 naval personnel onboard.

ICGS Varuna is an advanced offshore petrol vessel with a Chetak helicopter onboard. It is 74 meters in length and has a displacement of 1,247 tons. The ship has a complement of 187 Coast Guard personnel onboard.

The Indian naval and coast guard ships will stay in Sri Lanka until 21st April and the ships’ crews will participate in a special programme organized by the Sri Lanka Navy to enhance the mutual relations during their stay in Sri Lanka.
