The Government’s development works at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, are well over the halfway point, with $573 million of the total expected cost of $788 million having been spent. Over $149 million has already been spent this financial year.
The works are part of the Enhanced Land Force project, which will see the modernisation and increased capacity of Defence facilities across the country.
Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Senator David Feeney inspected the works today.
“This Enhanced Land Force project is a priority for the Government and demonstrates a clear long term commitment to Gallipoli Barracks and the Defence community living here,” Senator Feeney said.
“These works will provide the Australian Defence Force at Enoggera with modern, purpose-built facilities. These new facilities allow for the effective operational and training requirements of 7th Brigade, which has expanded under the Enhanced Land Force initiative.
“You will definitely start seeing more facilities in the coming months, as we see the completion of car parks, 7 Combat Support Regiment facilities, the Defence Clothing Store and the Defence Publishing Centre. In fact, the new $80 million facilities for 8/9 Battalion RAR (Royal Australian Regiment) were officially opened by the Chief of Army on 27 March.
“The works commenced in June 2010 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2014. On average, these works have delivered over 500 jobs that would not have existed otherwise. That’s good news for the people of Enoggera,” Senator Feeney said.
“These modern facilities also mean increased effectiveness and efficiency for Defence personnel working and training on the barracks.
“Although this Government has delivered many high quality new facilities already, there are still quite a few to look forward to over the next 18 to 20 months,” he said.
