Sri Lanka: Suranimala returns after Aman 13 in Pakistan


Sri Lanka Navy’s Fast Missile Ship ‘Suranimala’ returned after participating in the Aman 13, the multinational naval exercise conducted by the Pakistan Navy from 04th to 08th March 2013 in Karachi, Pakistan.

“Aman” (Peace in Urdu) is the series of multinational exercises started in 2007 with a view to promote regional cooperation and stability, greater interoperability and display a united resolve against terrorism and crimes in maritime domain including piracy. Aman 13 is the fourth such exercise planned by the Pakistan Navy.

Australia, Bangladesh, China, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States of America were among the countries participated in the event with their naval assets.

This is the first time that a Sri Lanka Naval ship visited the port of Karachi in Pakistan in her 62 year history. SLNS Suranimala was welcomed according to naval traditions on her arrival and the SLN participation in the event was highly appreciated by the Government of Pakistan. 

Chief of Naval Staff of Pakistan, Admiral M. Asif Sandila and High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Pakistan, His Excellency Air Chief Marshal (Rtd) Jayalath Weerakkody were among the VIPs who came on board the ship. They were warmly welcomed by Commanding Officer of SLNS Suranimila, Captain Jayantha Kularatne.
