News Story: Taiwan to send destroyers on first overseas live-fire drill

Taiwan's navy will send its Kidd-class destroyers to conduct their first-ever overseas live-fire exercise off Hawaii next year, military sources have told our Chinese-language sister newspaper China Times.

The ROC Navy will request assistance from the US Navy to test-fire the SM-2MR surface-to-air missiles deployed on the warships.

Taipei will also ask Washington's permission for to take part in future drills in the Pacific, such as the biannual RIMPAC exercises.

Anonymous sources have confirmed that Taiwan's deputy defense minister, Andrew Yang, officially made the proposals to the US officials during a trip to Washington for a high-level military exchange earlier this year.
