The position of chief of the general staff, the highest position in Taiwan's military, will be downgraded from a four-star general to a three-star general after the Organic Law of the Ministry of National Defense was approved by the country's legislature on Nov. 27.
The rank of four-star general will still exist but only officers who are regarded as "remarkable" senior generals will have the chance to gain a fourth star on their shoulder in the future. A military source said "remarkable" would suggest a war hero.
