Five Type 094 Jin-class submarines with the capability to launch nuclear missiles will enter service with the PLA Navy in two years, according to a draft prepared by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission's 2012 annual report.
Beijing has spent huge resources on developing the nation's nuclear submarine fleet. "Building a strong national defense and powerful armed forces that are commensurate with China's international standing and meet the needs of its security and development interests is a strategic task of China's modernization drive," the Chinese president, Hu Jintao, said at the opening of the Communist Party's 18th National Congress on Thursday.
