Adm. Cecil Haney, commander of the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, sat down with U-T San Diego last week to discuss the Pentagon’s plan to focus on Asia and the Pacific region.
The four-star admiral, whose headquarters is in Hawaii, also talked about the Navy’s newest warship line, the littoral combat ship.
The first two littoral ships, the Freedom and the Independence, are stationed in San Diego, and at least 16 will eventually call San Diego Bay home.
A controversial ship because of its higher-than-advertised price and early performance headaches, the littoral is designed to switch out “modules” that allow it to change missions from anti-mine to anti-sub to anti-ship. The vessels also run with two crews, who swap out every few months.
