Sri Lanka: Navy intercepts Australia-bound Multi-day Trawler in Eastern Seas

Sri Lanka Navy intercepted a multi-day trawler illegally headed for Australia in the deep seas off Trincomalee today (13th July 2012). The intercepted trawler was brought to Trincomalee harbor with 41 persons including 31 men, 05 women and 05 children onboard. Among the children were 02 boys and 03 girls that included an infant.

The over-crowded trawler named “Mihiru Putha I” was detected by 02 Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command. The arrest is the second made by the Navy within 04 days in Sri Lanka’s Eastern waters. Navy’s vigilance has been able to avert two human tragedies in the prevailing rough seas.
