Indonesia has decided to buy Leopard 2A6 Main Battle Tanks (MBT) from Germany with delivery schedule to commence in October this year, a statement released by the Indonesian defense ministry said here on Monday, July 2, 2012.
The Indonesian army has received a major budget boost to modernise its weaponry. As part of the programme the army has already agreed on the purchase of 100 Leopard 2 A6 tanks for which $280 million is available, according to Indonesian media sources.
Defense Deputy Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said that the decision to buy those tanks from Germany annulled government's initial plans to buy them from the Netherlands.
