Navantia today launches the second amphibious LHD for Australia

HMAS Canberra's launch

Navantia boot today at 17:43 h. at its facilities in Ferrol, the second amphibious ship for the Royal Australian Navy in the presence of the Matron, Mrs. Maureen Banks, together with the Head of the Royal Australian Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, and representatives of the Commonwealth, BAE Systems, SEPI and Navantia.

The construction of "Adelaide", which is thrown with four and a half months in advance, began with the metal-cutting ceremony on February 2, 2010, to proceed with the laying of the keel on February 18, 2011.

This early launch provides additional time for the equipment and testing until early 2014, in which the hull will be transported to Australia for completion and delivery of BAE Systems Australia in Williamstown.

These two amphibious ships were hired on November 23, 2007 in Melbourne and will be delivered by BAE Systems to the Commonwealth of Australia in 2014 and 2015.

The Australian ALHD design is based on the Strategic Projection Ship "Juan Carlos I" of the Spanish Armada.

To my knowledge Australia has bought these ships, the above reference to “hired” in the 2nd last paragraph is probably a Google translation error.
