Brunei: ASEAN DEFENCE SENIOR OFFICIALS’ MEETING

SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA, Wednesday 25 April 2012 - The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) concluded successfully today at the Angkor Century Hotel, Siem Reap, Cambodia. The Meeting was chaired by General Neang Phat, Secretary of State, Ministry of National Defense, Kingdom of Cambodia.

The Meeting received and discussed the progress of ASEAN defence cooperation, namely, ASEAN Defence Establishments and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Cooperation on Non-Traditional Security by Thailand; ASEAN Defence Industry Collaboration by Malaysia; and the Preparation of the First ASEAN Peacekeeping Centres Network Meeting by Indonesia and Thailand. In addition, the Meeting was briefed on the outcomes of the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Working Group and the 5th Network of ASEAN Defence and Security Institutions held recently in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, respectively.

ASEAN defence senior officials also endorsed recommendations of the two initiatives proposed by the ASEAN Secretariat, namely, development of an ADMM Website; and Guidelines for Hosting the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting, ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus and Related Activities.

The Meeting also agreed on matters relating to the preparation of the upcoming ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting.

Brunei Darussalam was represented by Haji Awang Saifulbahri Haji Awang Mansor, Permanent Secretary (Defence Policy and Development), Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam. Haji Awang Saifulbahri has briefed the Meeting on preparations of Brunei Darussalam’s ADMM Chairmanship in 2013.
