Myanmar’s government has invited observers from the United States, the European Union and the United Nations to join more than two dozen election observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to monitor next month’s elections.
ASEAN will send five observers, 18 parliamentarians and some media representatives to oversee the vote on 1 April, at which 48 parliamentary seats are at stake, the 10-member bloc said in a statement on Tuesday.
The closely watched by-elections in April, which will see Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi stand for a parliamentary seat for the first time, are viewed as a key test of the military-backed government's commitment to reforms.
