THE Royal Australian Navy has been swamped with more than 200 inquiries from British sailors to join up, in response to an unprecedented drive to recruit foreign troops.
The strong response has come as a relief for the navy, which is suffering critical shortages of skilled personnel, especially marine engineers, on submarines, patrol boats and other ships.
The overseas recruitment drive is targeting sailors who have been retrenched in budget cutbacks in Britain and other Western countries and comes with the offer of fast-tracked Australian citizenship after just three months' service.
