US President Barack Obama has paid a powerful personal homage to the strength of the alliance with Australia, describing it as a deeply rooted human bond between two peoples who have stood shoulder to shoulder in every major conflict of the past century.
In an address to more than 1000 Australian troops in Darwin, Mr Obama said the two countries were witnessing "the next proud chapter in our alliance".
The plan to increase the US military presence in northern Australia was a deepening of the alliance with the common aim of "making sure that we do right by the people of this region".
