NORFOLK (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces (USFF), Adm. J.C. Harvey, Jr., hosted Chief of the General Staff, People's Liberation Army, People's Republic of China, Army General Chen Bingde and his official party May 19, for a variety of tours and briefings as the official guests of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Defense Department is hosting a number of events designed to improve mutual understanding between our two militaries and to seek cooperation in areas of mutual interest. These events include several bilateral discussions and visits to U.S. military bases to include Naval Station Norfolk.

General Chen and his staff were given pier side tours of the Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely (DDG 107) and USS Cole (DDG 67). During the tour Chen and his staff met with the ships' leaders and were given numerous one-on-one briefs by sailors from both ships.

Following the ship tours, the group visited the hangar of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 126 where they received a carrier air wing briefing and then moved to the flight line where they toured several aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 and met with the different squadrons' air and ground crews.

The group also witnessed field carrier landing practice conducted at Chamber's Field by Naval Air Station Oceana-based F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
