Australia treading a fine line between US and China

There’s an interesting article on ChinaDaily about how Australia will have to tread a fine line between the USA and China, it’s essentially advocating that Australia tries to help the two nations find a middle ground, rather than squabble over who “owns” the pacific.
The article raises some valid points about the rise of China as a future player (politicly and militarily), while the USA slowly diminishes in importance to the region, but also point out that the future of China/Pacific relations hinge on China's actions in the coming years.
The article is well worth the read, you can find it HERE.

I’d be interested in hearing your opinions on this subject; should Australia lean towards the USA or China, and if they do, what are the consequences of that choice?
