A Chinese frigate locked its fire-control radar on the JS Sawagiri — a destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force — on May 29 near a gas field in the disputed East China Sea, reports the Tokyo-based Asahi Shimbun.
The frigate also targeted a Japanese P-3C anti-submarine aircraft, a Japanese government source told the paper, adding that the incident took place when the vessel and aircraft of the JMSDF were patrolling Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the East China Sea. Tokyo has yet to confirm whether the report is true, however.
