News Story: US Warship intimidates Beijing as it sails to China Sea

A United States Navy guided-missile destroyer on Friday sailed through the South China Sea in a “freedom of navigation” operation which has reportedly intimidated China, White House officials said.

Though the U.S. is not a claimant nor a supporter of other claimants to the land features in the South China Sea, it has sought to assert disputes over land in the area should be settled through negotiation rather than coercion or military force, White House spokesman Josh Earnest confirmed.

Earnest said the guided-missile warship USS Decatur sailed within the vicinity of the Paracel Islands in order to challenge China’s claims in the South China Sea.
