China would not benefit from challenging US sea power in the Western Pacific, as this would result in a lose-lose for both parties, according to an article featured on Sina's military news web portal.

The article stated that the relationship between Beijing and Washington has become more nuanced given the US parallel strategy of increased ties at the same time that it continues to try and contain China. In this context, any conflict which breaks out will likely be in a hot spot covering a limited geographical area and will be connected with China's core interests.

In the 21st century, the oceans have become an important resource not only in terms of fishing but also for the energy resources that lie beneath them, the article stated. This has led to conflict being focused on sovereignty over islands and their contiguous waters.
